After School Math/Science

School District # 22 (Vernon), BC

$40 an hour - Part-time 

The Aboriginal Education Department in School District # 22 is looking to contract tutors as needed in after-school Math/Science. 

Tutors will provide supplementary tutoring for Aboriginal students in a positive and encouraging environment.  A basic understanding of Aboriginal cultures, particularly as this relates to Aboriginal students, is an asset. Tutors will be paid by the hour for the schools they've been assigned, and these hours are subject to change dependent upon student need and student attendance.  Such schools may be either Elementary or Secondary schools in School District # 22.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to support math/science at any or all levels; positions available for Elementary and Secondary tutors;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to communicate professionally and build a rapport with students of all grades;
  • Tailor their services to the students' learning style;
  • Present information in several different ways or methods to help the student grasp concepts;
  • Passionate about the subject area;
  • Ability to move at the pace of the student;
  • Help students to understand how to understand /apply what they've learned in the classroom;
  • High school graduation and at least two years of successfully completing post-secondary courses in Math and the sciences; and
  • Must provide Criminal Record Check if not currently employed by School District # 22, if offered contract.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Grade 10
  • must possess and maintain a valid B.C. Class II driver's license with air brake endorsement
  • a driver's abstract is required for the employer to assess the driving record of the applicant

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • This position requires a conscientious driver with the ability to transport students safely and efficiently.  Demonstrated sound judgment is required for making driving decisions under various road conditions and for dealing with student behaviour.

    Services will not be required on In-Service and Non-Instructional Days.

    WAGE: As per Board/Union Contract
    SHIFT:  As assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, or designate

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Six (6) months relevant training which includes recent Okanagan College Certified Education Assistant (CEA) certificate including practicum experience or training in dealing with resistant students and conflict resolution
  • Familiarity with current computer programs such as Boardmaker, Intellitools, Clicker, Kurzweil, etc…
                                                  

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Proven ability to learn and successfully use new technology and to possess literacy, numeracy and English skills.
  • Proven ability to develop rapport with students and work in a team setting.
  • Personal attributes required include strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated initiative, flexibility, good communication skills.

Services will not be required on In-Service and Non-Instructional Days.

WAGE: PG6

SHIFT:  Schedule is dependent upon student needs.
