Recommendations and Forms
for Grades 8 thru 12 |
Vernon School District offers a variety of opportunities for international students that want to study in British Columbia. Please use this guideline to assist you in selecting the proper courses or programs suitable for you during your time studying in Vernon. Length of stay and level of courses will be determined by transferable credits, results from online assessments, and the list of required courses for BC Graduation.

Graduation Requirements |
Most international students need a minimum of 2 years to achieve full BC graduation. BC graduation requirements state that students MUST successfully complete:
- a minimum of 20 courses at grade 10 – 12
- at least three grade 12 provincial examinable courses in addition to English 12,

- English 10 provincial exam
- English 11 and 12
- Math 11
- Social Studies 11
- Planning 10
- Grad Transitions 12
- PE 10
- Fine Arts/Applied Skills 10
- Science 11 (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Earth Science)
Recommendations for students planning to graduate in BC:
- ESL/English Language Development
- English – level to be determined as per online test
- Math – level to be determined as per online test
- Social Studies 11 – only recommended for students with high English language ability
- Sciences – varies according to post secondary institution requirements. Students should consider their post secondary plans when selecting a specific science course
- Students are also encouraged to join school clubs, teams or fine arts groups, and to take courses that encourage their social interaction, such as PE, Art, Drama or Music classes.

Fast Track |
Students who have already graduated from their home country and are taking courses to show or improve proficiency in English language skills are considered to be on a “Fast Track” program. This does not fulfill BC Graduation requirements; it is strictly for post-secondary entrance purposes. Students may combine these courses with their certification from their home country to meet admission requirements for post-secondary institutions.
Students are expected to enroll in a total of eight courses. In addition to those recommended, the remaining courses should adhere to university entrance requirements or personal interest.
Recommendations:
- ESL or English Language Development 10 or 11
- English 11 and 12 (level to be determined as per online test)
- Math 11, 12 and Calculus (level to be determined as per online test)
- Sciences 11 and 12 as per university entrance requirements

Whitecaps FC Vernon Soccer Academy:
The Whitecaps FC Vernon Soccer Academy is a partnership program between School District No. 22, the North Okanagan Youth Soccer Association and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. This program is open to all secondary school students who have a desire to learn the game of soccer at a high level. The emphasis of the program is on skill development and interested students must be able to train at a physically demanding pace. Students will receive instruction from National level coaches.
Applicants will be required to write a short essay on how this program will help them achieve their goals in soccer. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive grade-appropriate Physical Education credit as well as credit for Principles of Soccer.
The Whitecaps FC Vernon Soccer Academy operates within the school day over the first semester. Cost for the program is $1,250.00. Training takes place at Marshall Fields and the Vantage One In-door Soccer Centre. Round-trip bussing is provided. |
