Why is Vernon a great place to live and study?
I think that Vernon is a great place to live and study. Firstly, Vernon is a small and calm city. It is very appropriate for students to live and study. Plus, it also has some entertainment, such as the mall and movie theatre. The students concentrate at school and pay attention to their studies. Moreover, its environment is very nice. Vernon has clear lakes and many hills. Those things allow the students to be happy living and studying in Vernon.
Why is your homestay a great place to stay?
Homestay is the best place to stay for me. When I stay with my host family, they are warm and kind, they make me feel like I am with my real family. Staying with homestay can help improve my English. Besides, I can learn more about Canadian life, such as their food, culture, behavior and social activities. That’s why I like staying in homestay. |

China |
I like the Vernon School District. Here, high school has big differences from Chinese schools. There is really a lot of freedom in school. You can do many of the things that you like.
I love Canada, and I want to live here. Canada is beautiful country. I love maple leaves very much. Moreover, Canadians are very friendly. When everyone meets they say ‘hello’. I will enjoy my time while I live here. |

Germany |
Phillip a student from Germany at Charles Bloom wrote the following:
My experiences, or impressions of being an international student in Canada, are positive because of its multicultural society which makes it easy to integrate. The community of Lumby, and the School District 22 organization for international students in general, have impressed me in a positive way. Other impressions that are more neutral than positive or negative are, for example, the beautiful British Colombian landscape and the different attitudes of Canadians towards social and political issues; issues that are not so liberal in Germany.
One good experience was a result of Canada’s multicultural population that makes it easier for foreign students to integrate. This is probably reasoned by the fact that, when it is normal for people to live with lots of different nations together, it is not a big deal if there is someone from a foreign country. It thus gives the people, in general, an open mind about integrating with foreign people, so that even the border officers are friendlier than in other countries.
Another positive impression, also determined by this friendly, open-minded nation, is the community of Lumby because it is easier to integrate into a community that accepts new members, although they may be only temporary, than in a community that is closed and stays closed to other people. This can also be explained with the fact that it is a multicultural community. But not only the community in Lumby was and is very open minded, the school community is welcoming, so it takes only a short while to integrate.
Another preferable reason to study in School District #22 is the organization which is provided for international students. For example, although one may think that international students may have lots of disadvantages while studying abroad in a School District #22 community school compared to “normal” Canadians, international students actually benefit from several advantages that the Canadian students don’t have. For example, extra curricular, cultural activities, as well as teaching-learning advantages and easy access to extra help because of lingual problems are all advantages available to international students of all nationalities.
In addition to all the positive experiences, there are some lasting impressions or experiences that are left by the mountainous, clean landscape and the fresh water lakes surrounding the Vernon, Okanagan districts. Another significant difference is the larger sized cars and 4 X 4 trucks driven in B.C as compared to the automobiles in Germany.
So for all these reasons the experiences or impressions to be a student in Canada from a foreign country are positive. I am thankful for my time and grateful my learning experiences at Charles Bloom Secondary, the high school I have been studying at in School District 22. I have made some lasting relationships and some unforgettable memories. |

Why I came to Canada/what do I like about Vernon School District
My name is Madeleine Schmickler and I am from a small town, near Bonn, in Germany. I began grade 11 at my school in Germany but, rather than stay in Germany, I decided to study abroad. Last year I became informed, through research, about what the procedure would involve in order for me to go to high school in Canada. It had been one of my greatest wishes to travel to another country and to improve my English skills while learning something about a new culture.
I chose to study in British Columbia (B.C.), which is a province within Canada. Canada is a country that, in theory, is similar in its mentality to Germany. I will stay and study in a B.C. Secondary School until February. I am attending a Secondary School within School District #22, Vernon, that is called “Charles Bloom Secondary School” .
I am enjoying the school experience because the teachers are nice and patient with you and they answer every question you have.
Also, the people in BC are really nice. You can ask everyone and anyone for help.
During the two months I have been here, I won a “whole bunch” of new friends. Indeed, I am happy to be here, to join and be part of “the most beautiful place in the world”.

Korea |
I’m an International student from Korea who is studying at CBSS, a high school of School District 22. It was at the end of Semester 2 last year, when I was in grade 9, that I decided to go to Canada to study English. English is the most important language that I must learn, since the world is becoming “one” global community. Learning English is also preparing me for my schooling in Korea as well as future work. So, I decided to go to Canada; a pretty big decision for a 13 year old to make.
Since I arrived here, I’ve had a lot of precious experiences and earned my English ability. Studying in Canada has given me experience of another culture and allowed me to make many new friends and to find a second, Canadian family; my home-stay family. Together with my new friends and family, I have experienced Canada and, from my teachers, I have learned to live in an English world.
As I go to school in Canada, I have found a few differences between the Korean and Canadian education environment. In Canada the class sizes are much smaller so that students and teachers can have a conversation between them well. Also, there is a strict policy against violence, especially in Vernon School District where violent behavior is not tolerated and schools are safe places. Restorative justice makes it so people are responsible for their actions and students behave well to keep their schools friendly and safe. It is totally nice to experience a Canadian education in such a wonderful environment.

Dear Students and Parents:
My name is Eduardo Michelsen C. and I attended the school year of 2008-2009 in Vernon B.C at W.L. Seaton Secondary School in 11 grade. Seaton is a very good school, it has subjects that I didn’t have in my home country at 11 grade like Literature 12 where you study history from the Vikings to the 21 century and all the poetry throughout that time and Accounting 11 that has business and introduction to banking. This are some of the subjects that I chose and I liked very much every subject that I took. There are a lot of subjects to choose from, and as long as you have taken the subjects you need to go back to your school, you can choose the subjects that you want. The teachers are very good people and I always had great support from them. Throughout the year there are a lot of activities at Seaton like presentations, dances, plays and many other. Vernon is a very nice place to live for a year it’s in between the Okanagan Lake and the Kalamalka Lake. I greatly enjoyed my school year and I also made some very good friends. I had an experience where I learned a lot and had many unforgettable moments.
Thank you for your attention
