Kindergarten Letter

August 20, 2019

If you have a child starting kindergarten at OKL this Spetmeber and you did not receive your kindergarten letter, please read on.  Please call the school the week of September 26 to find out which group your child is in if you did not receive this letter in the mail.

 Dear parents,

Welcome to Okanagan Landing Elementary School kindergarten program!

The following is intended to provide you with information about what happens in September with the kindergarten students.  Kindergarten is full time for all students following the transition period at the beginning of September (see below).  Okanagan Landing Elementary School hours are 8:25 to 2:30, Monday through Friday.

***Please mark this date on your calendar.  There will be a "Kindergarten Boot Camp" meeting for all parents of kindergarten children after the PAC BBQ on Wednesday Sept. 18th at 5:30 pm at Okanagan Landing School.  At this time we will give you the condensed version of everything you ever wanted to know about kindergarten but were afraid to ask.  We will discuss objectives of the kindergarten program, as well as basic routines and best practices to help you and your child get the most out of their school experience.  We will also take time to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you all at this meeting.

We would like to be sure that each child has a positive beginning to the full day every day program and that they attend school every day unless they are ill or have been excused from school in advance.   It is important that you communicate any concerns you may have for your child to us.   If you wish to speak to one of our kindergarten teachers individually regarding specific concerns (health, behavior, speech, development etc.) please call the school to set up an appointment (250-542-1181).

In order to facilitate a smooth and happy start into school, we are planning a gradual entry into school for our kindergarten pupils.  This consists of a series of "mini-sessions" during the first 9 days of school where the children will attend for shorter periods of time and with fewer children.  Full days, every day, will begin on Sept. 16th.

Parents will be responsible for the transportation of their children to and from school until Thursday September 16th.  Children should be picked up upon dismissal until the 13th.   Dismissal times vary during gradual entry so please note the times below on your calendars.

Gradual entry will begin on Wednesday, September 4th  for all students.  The students have been randomly divided into Groups A and B.  Please check the list at the end of this letter for your child's name so you know which group he/she is in.  Please note that we have not put the children in their set classrooms yet, as we still need to confirm numbers in all the grades (K-7) before this can be completed.  By the end of the first week of school, you will be informed as to which classroom your child will be placed in for the school year.

Gradual Entry will look like this:

For gradual entry days, please meet in room 6 Mrs. Hayhurst's room.

Beginning on Tuesday, September 10, please have your child line up outside their exterior classroom door.  Children will be dismissed from the outside classroom doors at the end of their day.  Please meet your child outside at the exterior classroom doors.  Thank-you.

There will be no bussing for kindergarten children until September 16th .  Parents, please arrange transportation for your child.

Beginning on Monday, September 16th, all the children will attend school and regular kindergarten will be in effect.  School instruction begins at 8:30 a.m. (first bell at 8:25), and ends at 2:30 p.m.  Please do not be late as your K student may get upset. Also please notify your child's teacher if someone else will be picking up your child (introduce them to the teacher, if possible).  We are very protective and will not let your child go with someone that we don't recognize or if we have not been notified of a change.

All kindergarten students attend Monday to Friday, 8:25 am to 2:30 pm.  Bus service begins and is available to students within the OKL catchment area beginning on September 16th  for kindergarten students.  You must register with the transportation department at the school board office if your child will be taking the bus. (250)549-9281.  It is essential that you take your child to the bus in the morning and meet your child at the bus stop after school.  The bus drivers are NOT ALLOWED to drop kindergarten children off without a parent/older sibling, friend etc. to meet them. They will be brought to the transportation office.

Please note that all class placements are not made until we have had time to observe the children together so that we can create balanced classes for the year.  Please bear with us for the first few days, as it is often confusing for various unforeseen reasons.

1.  Runners – please provide a pair of running shoes to be worn in class.  These will double as gym shoes throughout the year so they should fit well.  They should be left at school so that they can be worn instead of street shoes in the classroom.  These should not be shoes that tie.  Outdoor shoes should also be easy for your child to get on and off independently.

2.  Water Bottle -  every child will need a water bottle which will go back and forth from home to school each day so that it can be cleaned and filled at home.

4.  Supply fee is $45.00 – to cover the cost of all other school supplies including Kleenex, pencils, markers, paint, scissors, erasers, art and craft supplies and an activity fee.

5.  Backpack – should be large enough to hold a library book, snacks and lunch kit, information papers and completed art work.

Sincerely, Mrs. Parsons and Mrs. Hayhurst
