During the summer of 2007, The Vernon School District’s Discovery Program and Junior Open Door Program amalgamated to become The Vernon Alternative Learning Program (ALP). The ALP offers individualized course programs for students working on coursework at the 8 – 10 levels and offers both modified and adapted programming for students working at lower grade levels. Vernon Alternative Learning Program provides a school program for those students who cannot attend a regular secondary program for a variety of social, behavioural and/or emotional reasons. Our goal is to provide a space where students can experience the educational process in a supportive and positive environment.
Students who attend Vernon Alternative Learning Program must be referred through their home high school and The Director of Instruction, Mr. Don Wilcox, who can be contacted at 542-3331.
Our school is located in a separate facility away from all other SD #22 high schools.
Students attend a self-paced programme, two hours per day at ALP and are assigned to a class time during which they must attend, Monday through Friday of each week. Students are enrolled in a minimum of four courses when registering at ALP and are required to show steady progress in each during the duration of time that he or she is at The Vernon Alternative Learning Program.
Many students work towards returning to regular high school or can continue their education at our senior Open Door Alternate Programme.
The key factor that determines student success is the student's willingness to take personal responsibility for his or her own education. If willing to do so, we are committed to helping him/her achieve personal educational goals!
We have a NOYFS (North Okanagan Youth & Family Support) workers at our school who work with all of our students.
