Harwood Elementary: The Hub of Belonging

At Harwood, the student success goal is centered on creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment where all learners feel valued and included. A key focus is ensuring that students’ basic needs are met so they can fully engage in their learning each day.

At the heart of this commitment is The Hub at Harwood—a dedicated space where students can access breakfast, snacks, and lunch daily. Food is prepared and served in an inclusive, welcoming environment that also features two grow towers, reinforcing both nourishment and connection. The Hub has become a gathering place where students feel supported, cared for, and part of the school community.

Harwood also works intentionally to build a strong school culture and a sense of belonging through a wide range of activities. Clubs, school‑wide events, and the annual Harwood Has Talent show provide students with opportunities to connect, express themselves, and celebrate one another. Shared experiences such as the Harwood Olympic torch walk and Olympic run during this past month have further strengthened community and school spirit.

Social emotional learning and kindness are also emphasized throughout the year.  On Pink Shirt Day, students participated in a school assembly focused on understanding bullying, learning how to respond when they or others experience unkind behaviour, and exploring why people may act the way they do.  Students are encouraged to be their best selves, support one another, and feel confident in who they are.
