Kalamalka Secondary - Music and Belonging
Kalamalka Secondary School recently had the opportunity to host bilingual Hip Hop, Rap, and Soul performer Missy D, creating a vibrant learning experience that celebrated both French language learning and Black History Month. Students from Kidston and Coldstream Elementary Schools joined Kalamalka’s Grade 8 students and French learners in Grades 9–12 for an energetic and engaging performance that highlighted culture, language, and artistic expression. The event was made possible through the efforts of Ms. Fiala, Mr. Richard, and Ms. Manthorne. The school extends its appreciation to Missy D for sharing her talent and message with students.
In addition to celebrating culture and creativity, Kalamalka Secondary launched the first meeting of its new Best Buddies Club, an initiative designed to promote inclusion and connection. Staff and students recognized that some learners—particularly those with diverse learning needs or who experience barriers to inclusion—often spend lunch on their own. The Best Buddies Club was created to offer a welcoming space where students can build friendships, strengthen social skills, and develop a greater sense of belonging within the school community.
The club reflects the core values of kindness
Best Buddies meets every Friday at lunch for games, conversation, and shared activities. Club members also support the school community by helping run the cafeteria during school breaks, creating additional opportunities for connection while raising funds for snacks and future club outings. Kalamalka Secondary is proud of the students and staff whose dedication and leadership brought this meaningful initiative to life.
