Learning Through Culture - Indigenous Knowledge Comes Alive at vLearn & Academies

vLearn & Academies recently welcomed Chef Chantelle Eustache through the Indigenous Aunties and Uncles Program, providing students with a meaningful opportunity to engage in hands‑on, experiential learning rooted in Indigenous culture and tradition.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 participated in learning centered on traditional foods, guided by Chef Chantelle’s knowledge and experience. Through discussions and activities, students learned about traditional foods, how they are harvested and prepared, and their cultural significance. These shared experiences promote curiosity, respect, and connection while deepening understanding through active participation.

Beyond food preparation, Chef Chantelle shared her personal journey as a W.L. Seaton graduate and spoke about the importance of syilx language, family traditions, and the role of food within her culture. These stories supported meaningful reflection for both students and staff, highlighting the importance of relationships, identity, and community in Indigenous ways of knowing.

During the visit, students worked collaboratively to create muddled teas and herb butters, which they enjoyed alongside freshly prepared bannock. These activities encouraged reflection, and hands‑on learning, offering an authentic and respectful way to engage with Indigenous knowledge.
